YORUBA FOLKTALES: Tortoise (Ijapa) and the Elephant

Image
Long ago in the animal kingdom of  Agodo, animals lived in peace and harmony, and they could all talk like human beings. The kingdom was ruled by the lion and the animals so much loved his reign. But there was a time the lion fell sick. The sickness was so bad that  Karatu, the great herbalist that lived in the jungle, had to be consulted. Karatu said the king could only get well if he drink a concoction made from elephant body parts. In the kingdom of Agodo, the elephant was a big bully and tyrant, the animals never loved him and were also scared of him because of his size and strength. When the king’s subjects asked the animals who could capture the elephant, there was no response. The king then managed to speak, he said, “ I will give anyone who capture the elephant half of the kingdom and my beautiful daughter to marry “. Hearing this, the tortoise stepped forward and pledged to bring the elephant. The king’s subjects were happy and wished him succes...

YORUBA FOLKTALE: OLURONBI AND THE IROKO TREE

Image
This is the story of Oluronbi my grandmother told me when i was young. Oluronbi was a market woman who was not having luck with her sales. On the way to the market where she sells her wares is an iroko tree that people pray to when they want somehting. They promise to pay a price when he answers their prayers. People usually promise things like money, goats, rams, and other material things like that. Oluronbi however, had been in a slump for a while so she decided tht she needed a big gift for the tree. She went to the Iroko and said "If you give me success and let me sell all my clothes today at the market, I will give to you my beautiful daughter." The girl was there when her mother made this promise and she got upset. Her mother told her not to worry that she would not be given. she said she was only lying to get good sales. They went to the market and Oluronbi did have a great sale. she sold everything in her shop and at the end of the day, she bought a ...

Ojo is the Yoruba word for days

Image
The religion of the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigreia is Orisa. The word "Orisa" means "those whose heads were created more superior then others." Each of these deities are the ministrers of God (Olodumare), and the word of Almighty God. They are called Orisa (Eni ti ori sa da). In the beginning, human beings did not have names for the days. It was Obatala (arch divinity, God of Creativity) who went to Olodumare to obtain weekdays for all the rest of Orisa. it was Orunmila who established the days, hence one of the Odus recited: Ifa loni oni Ifa loni ola Ifa loni ojo mereerin Oosada saye It is Ifa who owns today It is Ifa who owns tomorrow It is Ifa who owns the fourth day that Orisa made on Earth In a paragraph of oriki of Obatala one of his daughters asked- can we know the name of the days? Obatala says: Take a day for week of Orisaala Pick another day for Ogun Make another day for Jakuta (Sango) The remaining day is for Awo (Orunmila) it was only ...

Do you Know That ESU saved our UNIVERSE from Demise

Image
When ESU saved our UNIVERSE from Demise by Apetebi Oyaseye Fakayode There was a time when Olodumare, creator of the universe, was feeling ill and depressed because of situations that were spreading among the universe. After doing so much and giving so much Ase to the world, She became weak and frail. A message was sent out and all the Orisha, summoning them to bring whatever tools they needed and do what they can to help cure Olodumare and Her dilemma. The Orisha all gathered together in a great hall where Olodumare sat slumped in Her thrown, as they brainstormed methods that could help cure Her. Obatala was the first to attempt. He took out his whitests cloth and used it to wipe around the face of Olodumare…..there was no effect. Next to try was Orunmila, the Orisha of wisdom and divination. He prepared a special medicine for Oloduamare to drink, but still there was no effect. Next Osanyin, the Orisha who cared for the plants of the earth, took out an herbal rub and covered Olod...
